Energy reforms in Pakistan
Pakistan is the sixth most populated country in the world. After 30 years of strong growth and economic transformation, the past 30 years have come with declining growth rates and international competitiveness. As IGC’s largest country programme, IGC Pakistan has collaborated since 2010 with federal, provincial, and local governments along with the private sector on over 130 projects in areas including energy efficiency, urban transport, property tax, regional trade, and governance reforms. Collaborative projects that have informed policy include work on the design of election and legislative rules which informed the 2019 reform bill, economic framework development with the governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and waste and corruption reduction in public procurement, including developing an online procurement system. Going forward, IGC Pakistan will continue to work on a broad portfolio of projects, including strengthening government capacity to raise revenue, supporting export-oriented industries, improving urban services, and overcoming barriers to women’s mobility.
Housed in the country’s leading academic institution, the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), IGC Pakistan has supported the Federal Government on several policy issues. The programme also continues to link policymakers and local academics with international researchers from highly reputable international universities and leading local universities.
